My goal with this fiction writing class is not to fill you with inspiration. Brendan DuBois was a guest lecturer at the 2015 Odyssey Writing Workshop, where he spoke on the Fantastic World of the Short Story. Whereas the character-driven stories are heavily influenced by emotional development, in plot-driven stories, the action takes centre stage. This is a flash fiction challenge (stories in 100-175 words or less) and each story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end.

Even with omniscient, readers shouldn’t have to figure out whose thoughts they’re hearing or which character is noticing something happening in the corner of a crowded room. Take as much time as you need to do this, because you’re just saving time downstream. Plot consists of action and reaction, also referred to as stimulus and response and has a beginning, a middle, and an ending. Nader and the folks above is not supported.

You don’t need to start up right away after the other person has finished his or her bit. When I'm planning a story, I usually plan scenes first and then think later about how those might fit together in chapters.
